Paris Saint-Germain demonstrated resilience and flair as they overturned a two-goal deficit twice to secure a thrilling 5-3 Champions League victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Vitinha stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick, including two spectacular strikes and a penalty, while Pacho and Fabian Ruiz also found the net for the French champions.
PSG’s defence looked vulnerable at times, conceding twice due to lapses reminiscent of their recent 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich.
Yet, under Luis Enrique, the Parisians responded with composure and precision to claim all three points. Tottenham, who twice took the lead through Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani, were unable to hold back the hosts, finishing the match on eight points, 16th in the group, while PSG climbed to second and remain on track for direct qualification to the last 16.
The game began at a frenetic pace, with Fabian Ruiz narrowly missing a left-footed attempt in the eighth minute, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curling a shot just wide for PSG.
On captain Marquinhos’s 500th appearance, PSG felt the absence of Achraf Hakimi, with youngster Warren Zaire-Emery covering at right back. Ousmane Dembele, recently returned from injury, started on the bench, while academy graduate Quentin Ndjantou led the line.
“Very good performance,” said Marquinhos. “We wanted a perfect evening without conceding, but the attitude was there. Tottenham exploited our weaknesses, yet we stayed in the game. We never give up and have the right mindset.”
Tottenham initially looked sharp, breaking the deadlock ten minutes before halftime as Richarlison nodded home after Kolo Muani’s header set him up.
PSG immediately responded, with Vitinha firing a superb first-time strike from outside the box just before the interval to level the score. Both sides scored with their first shots on target.
The second half started with a shock as Kolo Muani volleyed Tottenham ahead, capitalising on Pacho’s weak clearance. But PSG responded swiftly: Vitinha curled home again in the 53rd minute, followed by Ruiz converting a back-heel setup from João Neves six minutes later. Pacho added a close-range finish to put the hosts two goals clear.
Kolo Muani pulled one back for Spurs in the 73rd minute, but a handball by Cristian Romero gave PSG a penalty, which Vitinha calmly converted to complete his hat-trick. Lucas Hernandez saw red in stoppage time for elbowing Xavi Simons, leaving PSG to finish with ten men.
Archie Gray reflected on Tottenham’s defeat, “They are the best team in Europe, relentless and full of individual class. We can learn from them, but it was tough to cope with moments of brilliance from players like Vitinha.”
