Sporting Lisbon came from behind to defeat Galatasaray 3-1 in their UEFA Champions League opener at the José Alvalade Stadium on Wednesday.
Galatasaray made the brighter start and were rewarded for their early pressure when Lucas Torreira’s effort took a deflection off Sporting defender Gonçalo Inácio before finding the net.
The visitors continued to look dangerous, with Leroy Sané, Torreira and Yunus Akgün causing problems for the Portuguese defence.
Sporting, however, restored parity in the 27th minute after a swift counter-attack ended with Geny Catamo finishing to make it 1-1.
Despite the equaliser, Galatasaray remained the more threatening side before the break, although they failed to make their chances count.
The hosts returned from the interval with a different approach and quickly took control of the contest.
In the 53rd minute, Doumbia slipped a pass behind the Galatasaray defence for Luis Suárez, who went around the goalkeeper before being brought down by Jacobs inside the penalty area.
Referee Espen Eskås pointed to the spot, and Suárez calmly converted the resulting penalty to put Sporting ahead for the first time.
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk responded by introducing Rafael Leão for Sané, but the change failed to halt Sporting’s momentum.
Sporting extended their advantage in the 63rd minute when Zalazar produced a superb free-kick, sending the ball into the top corner to make it 3-1.
Galatasaray struggled to find a response thereafter as Sporting managed the closing stages effectively.
The victory gave Sporting three points from their Champions League opener after completing a comeback against the Turkish champions.
