Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to an end on Tuesday night after a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium, sealing a dominant 5-1 aggregate victory for the Spanish side.
A clinical brace from Vinícius Júnior proved decisive, as Madrid booked their place in the quarter-finals in emphatic fashion.
Pep Guardiola’s men showed resilience despite being reduced to 10 players for much of the contest, firing 22 attempts at goal in a desperate bid to overturn the 3-0 first-leg deficit suffered at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The turning point came in the 22nd minute when captain Bernardo Silva was sent off for handling a goal-bound effort from Vinícius inside the box.
The Brazilian calmly converted from the spot to extend Madrid’s aggregate lead.
Vinícius later struck again deep into stoppage time, finishing from close range to cap a commanding display from the 15-time European champions.
Erling Haaland briefly raised hopes for the hosts with a goal, but Madrid always looked in control, with Vinícius ultimately having the final say after spurning several earlier chances.
Kylian Mbappé also made a second-half appearance, returning from a near month-long injury layoff. Madrid will be keen to keep him fit ahead of a quarter-final clash against either Bayern Munich or Atalanta, with Bayern holding a commanding 6-1 advantage from the first leg.
The result marks yet another frustrating chapter for City against Madrid, having now been eliminated by the Spanish giants four times in the last five seasons.
Guardiola’s side will particularly regret their costly first-leg display in Spain, which ultimately left them with too much ground to recover.
