UCL: PSV, Shakhtar Donetsk play 1-1 draw

PSV Eindhoven were held to a 1-1 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in their UEFA Champions League opener at the Philips Stadion on Wednesday.

The Dutch side started brightly, with Ivan Perisic testing the visitors early before Kodai Sano also went close with a long-range effort on his Champions League debut.

Shakhtar gradually settled into the contest and began creating problems for the hosts.

Their pressure eventually paid off in stoppage time when Gleiker Mendoza opened the scoring on his Champions League debut.

Mendoza took advantage of PSV’s defensive reshuffle after Sergino Dest went down following a challenge from Marlon Gomes.

VAR reviewed the incident and determined that Gomes had won the ball, allowing the goal to stand.

PSV responded quickly after the restart, with Dest making amends by equalising within three minutes.

The United States international found space inside the box and calmly guided Armando Obispo’s cut-back beyond the goalkeeper.

The hosts pushed for a winner, with Ruben van Bommel firing narrowly wide as PSV increased the pressure.

However, their intensity faded as the match progressed, while Shakhtar threatened sporadically on the counter.

Neither side could find a decisive second goal, leaving PSV to settle for a point despite extending their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions.

Shakhtar, meanwhile, will be satisfied with a valuable away draw on their return to the Champions League.
