UCL: Kane hits 50th goal as Bayern thrash Atalanta, enter quarter-finals

Bayern Munich powered into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in emphatic fashion, thrashing Atalanta 4-1 on the night to seal a dominant 10-2 aggregate victory in their last-16 tie.

It was another historic evening for Harry Kane, who struck twice to reach the 50-goal mark in the Champions League.

The England captain, leading the side at the Allianz Arena, played a central role in Bayern’s ruthless display as they booked a heavyweight quarter-final showdown with Real Madrid.

Bayern started with intensity, forcing Marco Sportiello into early saves from Raphaël Guerreiro.

However, the Atalanta goalkeeper’s resistance faltered midway through the first half. After a handball by Giorgio Scalvini led to a penalty, Sportiello initially denied Kane, only for the effort to be ruled out due to encroachment.

Kane made no mistake with the retake, calmly converting to open the scoring.

At the other end, Jonas Urbig produced key saves to keep Atalanta at bay, denying efforts from Mario Pašalić and Gianluca Scamacca.

Kane then doubled his tally early in the second half, showing strength and composure to beat challenges from Isak Hien and Kamaldeen Sulemana before finishing clinically into the top corner.

The floodgates soon opened. Youngster Lennart Karl curled home Bayern’s third after a neat assist from Luis Díaz, before the roles were reversed as Karl set up Díaz for a composed chipped finish.

Atalanta managed a late consolation through Lazar Samardžić, who headed home from close range, but it did little to change the narrative of a one-sided contest.

Kane’s milestone is particularly remarkable, he has now scored 50 goals in just 66 Champions League appearances, reaching the landmark quicker than most, with only Erling Haaland and Ruud van Nistelrooy having done so in fewer games.

The prolific forward’s form this season has been exceptional, with 47 goals across all competitions, his highest-ever tally and the most by any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

There was also a notable achievement for Karl, who at just 18 years and 24 days became the youngest German to both score and assist in a Champions League match, and the youngest ever to do so for Bayern.
