Borussia Dortmund ended their three-game winless run with a 2-1 victory over Sabah FK in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, thanks to a brace from striker Serhou Guirassy.
The Bundesliga side delivered an improved attacking performance to secure their first win of the month, although they had to withstand late pressure from the Azerbaijani hosts to claim all three points.
Dortmund started brightly, recording four shots on target within the opening 15 minutes.
Guirassy opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov failed to hold Felix Nmecha’s effort, allowing the striker to bundle the ball into the net.
Sabah responded in the 39th minute when Aden McCarthy headed home from a free-kick delivered by Tymoteusz Puchacz to restore parity before the break.
Guirassy, however, restored Dortmund’s advantage eight minutes into the second half.
The Guinea international finished with a delicate chip after Joey Veerman delivered a well-weighted cross into the penalty area.
The goal secured Guirassy’s second brace in this season’s Champions League, following his two-goal performance against Villarreal on the opening matchday.
It also ended his five-game goal drought for the German club.
Veerman, meanwhile, recorded his third assist for Dortmund, having previously provided one each in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.
Despite falling behind again, Sabah continued to search for an equaliser and created opportunities in the closing stages.
However, the hosts lacked precision in the final third as Dortmund held on for victory.
The result ended Dortmund’s four-match losing streak away from home in the Champions League.
Their previous defeats on the road had come against Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Bodø/Glimt.
Dortmund also became the first team to defeat Sabah on their home ground this season, ending the hosts’ run of five consecutive home victories, including four in qualifying matches.
The German club maintained their perfect record against Azerbaijani opposition, extending it to five victories from five matches after previous wins over Qarabag and Gabala.
However, Dortmund were unable to keep a clean sheet for the third consecutive Champions League fixture this season, having also conceded against Villarreal and Bodø/Glimt.
The victory was Dortmund’s seventh in 11 competitive matches in the 2026-27 campaign.
They have suffered just two defeats during that period.
The match also marked the first time a German team had faced Sabah FK in the Champions League.
