UCL: Greenwood bags brace as Marseille edge Union St Gilloise 3-2

Mason Greenwood’s brace propelled Olympique de Marseille to a thrilling 3-2 Champions League comeback over Union St Gilloise on Tuesday, giving the French side a strong boost in their bid to reach the knockout stages.

The victory lifts Marseille to nine points from six matches, climbing to 16th in the group standings, while Union remain on six points in 25th place, struggling outside the qualifying positions.

Union shocked the hosts early, taking the lead within five minutes as Anan Khalaili cut inside from the edge of the box and slotted a low shot past Marseille keeper.

Marseille responded swiftly, with Igor Paixao capitalizing on a loose ball after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s initial effort was parried by goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen to level the score.

Greenwood then turned the game in Marseille’s favour, first connecting with Aubameyang to score from 12 yards, before adding a stunning second, spinning past his marker and firing beyond Scherpen.

Union fought back as Khalaili netted his second, but their hopes of a draw were dashed twice by narrowly ruled offsides, leaving Marseille with all three points.
