UCL: Copenhagen stun Villarreal 3-2

Andreas Cornelius delivered a dramatic 90th-minute winner to lift Copenhagen to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica, dealing a major blow to the hosts’ fading UEFA Champions League hopes.

The Yellow Submarine remain winless in this season’s competition and now stand perilously close to crashing out.

While Villarreal have been impressive in La Liga, sitting just five points behind leaders Barcelona with a game in hand, their Champions League journey has been nothing short of disastrous, collecting only one point from their first five fixtures.

That left this showdown as a must-win, but Copenhagen struck almost immediately. With less than two minutes played, Marcos Lopez delivered a superb cross to Mohamed Elyounoussi, who calmly slotted home past Luiz Junior to ignite the visitors’ qualification aspirations.

Copenhagen continued to look the sharper side early on, and Tajon Buchanan nearly doubled the lead with a long-range strike that skimmed inches past the post.

Villarreal eventually settled, buoyed largely by the lively Nicolas Pepe. The winger repeatedly troubled the visitors’ defence and forced Dominik Kotarski into the best save of the first half, but Copenhagen maintained their slender advantage heading into the break.

Marcelino responded with a bold triple substitution at half-time, including the unexpected withdrawal of Pepe and it paid off instantly.

Just moments after the restart, Santi Comesaña sneaked in at the back post to convert Ilias Akhomach’s delivery and pull Villarreal level.

But the joy was fleeting. Within seconds, Copenhagen hit back as Elias Achouri swept Yoram Zague’s cross past Junior, who will feel he should have done better.

The chaos continued, and in the 56th minute, substitute Tani Oluwaseyi curled in Villarreal’s second equaliser with a delicate outside-of-the-foot finish.

Villarreal then poured forward in search of a decisive goal, dominating possession but lacking the killer instinct. Their wastefulness was epitomized by Ayoze Pérez, who somehow missed from point-blank range.

Copenhagen punished those lapses in ruthless fashion. As the match ticked toward stoppage time, substitute Andreas Cornelius pounced inside the box and lashed home the winner, sealing the Danish side’s third lead of the night.

The visitors held firm in the final moments to keep their knockout-stage ambitions alive, with daunting fixtures against Napoli and Barcelona still ahead.

For Villarreal, the situation is grim: two games left, elimination looming, and just three wins in their last 21 Champions League league-phase matches.
