UCL: Atletico Madrid stun 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in Camp Nou

Atletico Madrid asserted their authority in the Champions League quarter-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Barcelona at the iconic Camp Nou on Wednesday, leaving the Catalan giants facing a daunting task in the second leg.

Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth proved decisive, but it was Atletico’s tactical discipline and defensive resilience that ultimately defined the match.

Barcelona controlled possession for much of the game, probing Atletico’s backline with their trademark passing game.

However, the visitors’ defensive structure remained almost impenetrable, and a pivotal moment came just before halftime when Pau Cubarsi was shown a red card.

The Barcelona goalkeeper brought down Giuliano Simeone as the last man in the 42nd minute, reducing the hosts to ten men and handing Atletico a golden opportunity.

Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the ensuing free kick and delivered a moment of pure brilliance. From 25 metres out, the striker curled the ball into the top corner, leaving no chance for the outstretched Cubarsi.

The goal came in first-half stoppage time, sending the visiting Atletico fans into celebration and silencing the otherwise raucous, sold-out stadium.

Barcelona tried to respond after the break, with Marcus Rashford coming close to scoring from a free kick that rattled the crossbar.

Despite the pressure, Atletico remained composed, showing the calm and patience expected from a team coached by Diego Simeone.

Their counter-attacks were precise and threatening, exploiting the spaces left by the depleted Barcelona side.

The match was sealed in the 70th minute when Mateo Ruggeri delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, and Alexander Sorloth met it with a clinical volley from close range.

The goal doubled Atletico’s lead and effectively secured a crucial away win, giving them a significant advantage heading into the second leg.
