Manchester United staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday, handing manager Michael Carrick a much-needed reprieve before Matheus Cunha was sent off late in the game.
United, who had gone nine matches without a victory across all competitions, produced a spirited second-half performance to overturn Roma’s first-half advantage.
The visitors took the lead in the 11th minute through Matias Soulé, who capitalised on United’s defensive vulnerability to beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Roma doubled their advantage six minutes later when Donyell Malen converted a penalty after Ayden Heaven’s handball in the box, leaving the hosts with a difficult task before the break.
United responded in the second half as Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.
The captain was allowed to retake the kick after his initial attempt was ruled out for encroachment.
Cunha then levelled the contest in the 83rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by Roma’s Leonardo Balerdi before completing the turnaround three minutes later with a powerful finish from Shea Lacey’s pass.
However, the Brazilian forward’s night ended on a sour note as he was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Leonardo Balerdi.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, United held on to secure the 3-2 victory, ending their winless run and easing pressure on Carrick following a difficult spell.
The result gives the English side a significant boost as they seek to rebuild their confidence and improve their performances in the Champions League and domestic competitions.
