Two persons have lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a trailer and a motorcycle on the new Ibadan-Oyo expressway in Fiditi, Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday evening as the victims—a man and a woman—were reportedly returning from a trip to Ibadan.
Eyewitnesses at the scene told our correspondent that the driver of the trailer was attempting to navigate around potholes on the highway when he lost control and crushed the motorcycle conveying the victims.
“The trailer driver was trying to avoid potholes when he veered and hit the motorcycle,” said one of the eyewitnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“The man died instantly, and the woman was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately passed away hours later.”
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Corps Commander of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State, Mr. Bayode Olugbesan, said, “As of yesterday, only one death had been confirmed. However, our officials have since commenced a hospital follow-up because a victim can only be officially pronounced dead after medical confirmation.”
The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed as of press time, and efforts to reach the trailer driver for comments were unsuccessful.
