Two people, including a six-year-old boy, have been killed after a truck drove into a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, in the United States, leaving 10 others hospitalised with traumatic injuries.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Stryker Sports Complex, where families had gathered to watch children play soccer.
Wichita police said the victims, a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The 10 injured victims sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe, although none appeared to be in life-threatening condition.
Police Captain Aaron Moses disclosed that a 34-year-old woman was driving the truck when it entered the playing area before coming to a stop in a field at the western end of the complex.
The driver, who has been cooperating with investigators, is in police custody.
Authorities have yet to establish what caused the vehicle to enter the soccer game.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said investigators were working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” Sullivan said.
According to police, those injured included six children aged five to nine and five adults.
Two of the children were five years old, two were eight, while another was nine.
An additional adult was taken to hospital for medical issues unrelated to traumatic injuries sustained in the incident.
Moses said the driver also had a child participating in a soccer match at the sports complex, although the child was not playing on the field where the incident occurred.
Two other children were passengers in the truck.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about the incident at approximately 3:25 p.m. local time on Saturday.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu described the incident as a devastating tragedy for the city, expressing sympathy for the families affected.
“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” Wu said, noting that families had gathered at the complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the incident as investigations continue.
