Twente hand PSV first Eredivisie defeat

FC Twente came from behind to beat reigning Eredivisie champions PSV 3-2 on Sunday, handing the visitors their first league defeat of the season in Enschede.

PSV, who had moved to the top of the table last week, made a difficult start when Ricardo Pepi was forced off with an injury early in the game.

Twente took advantage of the setback after Younes Taha reacted quickest to a rebound to put the hosts ahead after 14 minutes.

PSV responded strongly, with Guus Til heading in the equaliser in the 24th minute before completing his brace five minutes later to give the champions a 2-1 lead.

Twente pushed for a way back after the break and created several opportunities, with Sondre Orjasaeter and Wout Weghorst coming close before the latter eventually levelled in the 79th minute.

The hosts then completed their comeback when Daouda Weidmann produced a superb solo run from deep inside his own half before beating PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar to make it 3-2.

PSV failed to find another equaliser as Twente held on for a memorable victory, their first over the champions in four years.

The defeat also saw PSV lose top spot after just one week, with AZ Alkmaar reclaiming first place while Feyenoord’s 5-0 victory earlier in the day lifted them above PSV into second.
