Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed at least 80 armed bandits during a fierce confrontation near the Kebbi–Zamfara border, marking one of the most decisive operations against insurgents in recent months.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris Zuru, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, describing the operation as “a major breakthrough in Kebbi’s ongoing battle against banditry.”
According to Zuru, the success was recorded in Ngaski Local Government Area following the strategic deployment of fully equipped soldiers across Kebbi’s borders with Sokoto, Zamfara, and Niger States — a move initiated by Governor Nasir Idris to tighten security.
“Credible intelligence reports had indicated the movement of armed groups toward Makurdi village. Our troops immediately launched a coordinated response and engaged the attackers in heavy gunfire on Friday and Saturday nights,” he said.
Zuru explained that the operation led to the neutralisation of about 80 bandits, while several others fled with gunshot wounds. Two kidnapped victims were rescued, and several motorcycles used by the attackers were recovered.
The Director of Security, Abdulrahman Usman, praised the synergy between the state government and the Nigerian Army, noting that sustained collaboration had drastically reduced violent attacks across communities.
“The success we’re seeing today is a result of strong coordination between the government and our security forces,” Usman said. “We remain committed to sustaining the momentum until peace is fully restored.”
Governor Nasir Idris, who recently donated 100 Hilux vehicles and 5,000 motorcycles to enhance troop mobility, reiterated his administration’s resolve to make Kebbi unsafe for criminal elements.
In his reaction, the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Muhammad, commended the soldiers for their bravery and lauded Governor Idris for his proactive leadership.
“The people of Kebbi are proud of the gallant efforts of our troops and the unwavering commitment of the governor,” the Emir said. “These victories are restoring peace and hope to our communities.”
