Three tankers hit by unknown projectiles in Strait of Hormuz

In this picture obtained from Iran's ISNA news agency on May 4, 2026, vessels are pictured anchored in the Strait of Hormuz off Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. Iran's Revolutionary Guards on May 4 denied that any commercial ships had crossed the Strait of Hormuz, after the US military earlier said two US-flagged merchant vessels had transited through the vital waterway. Three vessels were struck by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre.

The British maritime agency said on Wednesday that the affected vessels included a crude oil tanker, a liquefied natural gas tanker and another ship.

The UKMTO said the three vessels had each “been struck by an unknown projectile”, but provided no further details on the incidents.

The Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint in the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, with commercial shipping facing increasing risks in the strategic waterway.

Before the war, about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the strait, making it one of the most important energy routes globally.

Since the conflict began, Iran has restricted the movement of commercial vessels through the waterway and fired on ships it accused of making unauthorised crossings.

The United States has responded by imposing a counterblockade on Iranian ports as part of efforts to prevent Tehran from exporting its oil.
