Ter Stegen reinstated as Barcelona captain

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has regained the club’s captaincy after settling his recent dispute with the Spanish giants.

The standoff between Ter Stegen and Barcelona took a dramatic turn on Friday, culminating in a peaceful resolution after a tense 24 hours.

Just a day earlier, the club had announced that disciplinary action was being taken against the German shot-stopper for refusing to sign a medical document intended for La Liga in connection with his recent surgery.

That decision had also cost him the captain’s armband.

Barcelona had been pushing to allocate 80% of Ter Stegen’s wages to register Joan Garcia, believing the 33-year-old would be sidelined for more than four months due to a back injury.

Initially, the player resisted the move, but he has since agreed.

In an official statement, as cited by Football Espana, the club confirmed that Ter Stegen has now signed the required documentation.

Consequently, the disciplinary case has been closed, and he has been reinstated as first-team captain.

“FC Barcelona report that Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorization for the club’s Medical Services to process the mandatory medical report in La Liga following his surgery. The disciplinary file is closed and the player recovers the captaincy of the first team with immediate effect.”

Earlier on Friday, Ter Stegen issued a statement expressing his willingness to cooperate with the club’s request, a commitment he has now fulfilled.

With the matter resolved, both sides aim to move forward and repair relations in the coming weeks.

La Liga is now expected to approve Ter Stegen’s extended absence, clearing the way for Barcelona to register Garcia.

Combined with Iñigo Martínez’s likely move to Al-Nassr, the Catalan side should have room to register several players ahead of next week’s league opener against Mallorca.
