Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of Brazilian midfielder, Reinier Jesus, who has signed for Atlético Mineiro as a free agent.
The 23-year-old still had a year left on his contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Los Blancos agreed to release him, securing a 50% sell-on clause in the deal.
He has committed to the Belo Horizonte outfit until December 2029.
Reinier joined Madrid in January 2020 from Flamengo in a €30 million ($34.9m) move, arriving with high expectations after the Spanish giants beat Barcelona and Manchester City to his signature.
However, he never made a competitive first-team appearance and instead spent the next five years on loan with Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone, and Granada.
Speaking upon his unveiling at Atlético Mineiro, Reinier reflected on his struggles in Europe, “I was searching for happiness. I wasn’t happy before, but here I feel the affection I was missing. I’m excited to wear this shirt, ready to give my all, and determined to help the team.”
Last season, he featured 25 times for Granada in Spain’s second tier, contributing one goal and four assists. Before moving to Europe, Reinier played a key role in Flamengo’s triumphant 2019 campaign, winning both the Brazilian Serie A and Copa Libertadores titles.
