At least five people, including a student, have been killed and three others injured after unidentified gunmen launched a night attack on a hunters’ office in Gidan Waya, located in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The victims were members of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, Gidan Waya Command.
Confirming the incident, the command’s intelligence officer, Mr. Gaji Ampot, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday that the attack occurred on Wednesday night.
According to Ampot, the assailants struck at about 8 p.m., approaching the facility from two different directions before opening fire on personnel who were on duty.
“One of the gunmen arrived on a motorcycle from one direction, while others approached on foot from the opposite side and began shooting.
“All but one of the victims were our men. The fifth person killed was a student who was in our office to resolve an issue,” he said.
He further disclosed that those injured in the attack had been taken to a hospital for treatment.
A resident of the community, who preferred to remain anonymous, linked the attack to the efforts of NFSS operatives in tackling banditry in the area.
At the scene of the incident, traces of blood could be seen, while residents gathered in clusters discussing the tragic development.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Gidan Waya and surrounding communities had previously experienced frequent attacks, although the area had recently enjoyed a period of relative peace.
