Spain have etched their name into football history as the first country to simultaneously hold the FIFA Men’s World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles.
FIFA confirmed the landmark achievement in a post on its official X account on Sunday after Spain edged Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York.
Celebrating the feat, FIFA wrote, “History-makers Spain have become the first nation to hold both the @FIFAWorldCup and @FIFAWWC simultaneously!”
The men’s triumph comes three years after Spain’s women’s team secured its maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over England in the 2023 final in Sydney, Australia, courtesy of Olga Carmona’s winning goal.
Spain’s latest success also delivered the country’s second men’s World Cup crown, adding to the title it won at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
With the 2026 triumph, Spain became the first nation to be reigning champions in both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups at the same time, a milestone unmatched since the inception of the two global competitions.
The achievement further underlines Spain’s dominance on the international stage in recent years.
Beyond lifting both World Cup trophies, Spain’s men’s team also captured the UEFA European Championship in 2024, while the women’s side has continued to establish itself as one of the world’s elite teams since winning its first global title in Australia and New Zealand.
