Nigerian plane crash survivor and motivational speaker, Kelechi Okwuchi, has successfully undergone eyelid surgery — her first major medical procedure since 2019.
Okwuchi, who sustained life-altering burns in the 2005 Sosoliso Airlines crash, shared the update with her followers on social media, revealing she is currently three days into recovery.
According to her, tightening of the skin around her eyelids had made it increasingly difficult to blink or fully close her eyes, a condition that began interfering with her vision and made the surgery necessary.
“Currently three days post-op from eyelid surgery. The skin on my eyelids is tight, making me unable to close my eyes or blink properly, which started to affect my eyesight, hence the need for surgery,” she explained.
The 30-something-year-old speaker reflected on the experience, noting the long gap since her last operation.
“My last surgery was in 2019, so it’s kinda weird to be back here after so long lol,” she wrote.
Okwuchi is one of only two survivors of the Sosoliso Airlines crash that killed 107 people, including 60 of her Loyola Jesuit College schoolmates.
Since then, she has undergone several reconstructive surgeries while building a celebrated career as an author, public speaker, and America’s Got Talent finalist — inspiring millions worldwide with her resilience and courage.
