Arsenal legend, Sol Campbell, has urged the club to clarify its rationale behind signing Chelsea winger, Noni Madueke, as questions mount over the surprise £50 million transfer.
Manager Mikel Arteta, working closely with new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has wasted no time in strengthening the squad this summer.
Arsenal have already sealed deals for Spanish duo Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi and are negotiating for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
On Thursday evening, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Madueke deal was imminent, giving his trademark “here we go” update on X.
Sccording to Romano, the fee agreed with Chelsea exceeds £50 million including add-ons, with the England international already committing to a five-year contract with the Gunners.
Despite the move progressing rapidly, the signing has left many Arsenal supporters puzzled, given Madueke’s limited impact at Chelsea last season, scoring seven goals and assisting three times in the Premier League.
Reacting to the transfer, Campbell told the Metro, “I’ve seen him play, and he’s a very dynamic, keep-going kind of player that can cause problems when he gets into the final third.
“I think most people are probably thinking, ‘Do we need him?’ He’s a quality player, but I think the club needs to explain why they’re getting certain players in and how it’s going to fit into our system. It’s important to explain that to the players and the fans.”
Amid speculation that Arsenal might still recruit another wide player, attention has turned to the future of Gabriel Martinelli.
Campbell believes the Brazilian could be under strategic pressure from Arteta.
“Martinelli has been great. He’s been amazing,” Campbell added.
“He picked up at the back end of the last season. But you have to change it up. I think Arteta wants to put players quietly under pressure to see how they react. How will you respond to competition? If you’re a top player, you respond with concentration and quality. You put pressure on certain positions and certain players to get focus. That’s the focus you need to win something.”
Over 2,000 Arsenal supporters have expressed their disapproval of the move by signing a #NOTOMADUEKE online petition, reflecting the broader uncertainty around the winger’s role.
Former Manchester City defender, Micah Richards, also voiced doubts during an episode of The Rest Is Football podcast.
He questioned Madueke’s place in the squad, especially given Bukayo Saka’s dominance on the right wing.
“I like Zubimendi. We saw him in the Euros final, when Rodri came off. Very good player, tactically really good. He’s good on the ball, really good awareness in midfield,” Richards said.
“Gyokeres is a really good striker. I think a striker is more important than getting Madueke in first. Madueke… where is he going to play? He’s been playing for Chelsea on the left recently. I really like him as a player, but I like him on the right and he’s not going to play ahead of Bukayo Saka, is he? So, I’m scratching my head on that one.”
Richards acknowledged the value in squad depth but remained skeptical about the timing of the deal.
“I agree [that they need two players in every position]. But Saka is always fit normally, until he got that really bad injury.”
As Arsenal fans await official confirmation, the debate surrounding Madueke’s fit in the squad continues to gain momentum.
