Manchester United, legend, Paul Scholes believes Bruno Guimaraes can strengthen Arsenal as the Gunners look to defend their Premier League title.
The Brazilian midfielder was officially unveiled to Arsenal supporters at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday after completing a £75m transfer from Newcastle United.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had identified Guimaraes as his preferred midfield target earlier in the summer, with the club eventually reaching an agreement with Newcastle following weeks of negotiations.
Although Scholes admitted that Guimaraes has never particularly impressed him, the former England midfielder believes the 28-year-old could still have a positive impact on Arsenal’s style of play.
“I think Bruno Guimaraes will make Arsenal a better football team,” Scholes said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, sponsored by Midnite (via Metro).
“I don’t think the football we watched from them was great. You need midfield players to make your team play good football – is he going to do that enough for Arsenal?
“I know they won the league but I don’t think they got the midfield right last season.
“Maybe this is the answer to it but I do think Sandro Tonali is a better player, he’s got more legs about him.
“I don’t think Bruno is amazing physically but he might be more suited to Arsenal.”
Scholes also rated former Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali above Guimaraes, describing the Italian as a more complete midfielder.
Arsenal had been among the clubs interested in Tonali before Tottenham completed a club-record £100m deal for the midfielder.
Despite his preference for Tonali, Scholes believes Guimaraes could prove a better fit for Arteta’s side as they prepare for another title challenge.
