A heavy downpour on Sunday has resulted in significant flooding across parts of Yola, the Adamawa State capital, submerging homes and rendering major roads impassable.
Among the areas hardest hit are Shagari Lowcost, Sabon Pegi, and Modire Yolde Pate, where rising floodwaters have forced residents to abandon their homes and disrupted normal life.
The affected communities are battling extensive property damage and ongoing displacement.
Eyewitnesses described the rainstorm, which lasted several hours, as one of the most intense in recent memory.
“We need urgent help. The water has taken over our homes and we don’t know where to go,” lamented a resident of Shagari Lowcost, highlighting the dire situation.
At the time of reporting, official casualty figures had yet to be released. However, the widespread destruction has drawn attention to the inadequacy of Yola’s drainage systems and the risk of further devastation should the rains continue.
In a swift response, the Adamawa State Police Command has deployed its marine unit, equipped with engine-powered boats, to rescue residents stranded by the flood.
This effort is being carried out in collaboration with troops from the 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army based in Yola.
“We are working closely with the military and community leaders to reach those in distress and prevent further harm,” a spokesperson for the command confirmed, emphasizing the coordinated emergency response currently underway in the city.
