Serie A: Juventus beat Genoa 2-0, boost top-four hopes

Juventus strengthened their push for a top-four finish in Serie A with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Genoa at the Allianz Stadium.

The Turin side took full advantage of dropped points elsewhere, moving to within one point of the Champions League places after Como were held to a goalless draw by Udinese and Roma suffered defeat against league leaders Inter Milan.

Juventus made the perfect start as Bremer struck in just the fourth minute, rising highest to head home after Lloyd Kelly nodded the ball across goal. Genoa protested for a foul in the build-up, but referee Davide Massa allowed the goal to stand.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 17th minute through Weston McKennie. A swift counter-attack carved Genoa open before Francisco Conceicao picked out McKennie, who calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner.

McKennie could have had more goals before the break, first blazing over from close range after a cross from Kenan Yildiz, then missing another golden opportunity shortly after halftime following neat play involving Khephren Thuram.

Juventus continued to dominate and almost grabbed a third when Jonathan David rattled the post with a powerful long-range effort.

Despite their control, Juventus were briefly given a scare late in the second half. Bremer brought down Aaron Martin near the edge of the box, and after a VAR review, Genoa were awarded a penalty.

However, goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio came to Juventus’ rescue, saving Martin’s spot-kick before also denying him on the rebound.
Arkadiusz Milik nearly added gloss to the scoreline late on, but his effort from distance was tipped over by Justin Bijlow.

The result marked Juventus’ 16th league win of the season and ended a run of inconsistent form, having won only two of their previous seven Serie A matches.

McKennie was one of the standout performers, registering the highest expected goals tally of any Juventus player with 1.61 xG and producing three shots.

Bremer’s opener also continued an impressive trend for Juventus, who remain unbeaten in all 18 league matches in which they have scored first this season, winning 15 and drawing three.

They also recorded a fifth straight Serie A clean sheet against Genoa, matching their best-ever defensive run against the club.
