Serie A: Hojlund’s stoppage-time penalty hands Napoli win over 10-man Genoa

Napoli extended their Serie A winning streak in dramatic fashion, edging Genoa 3–2 thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Rasmus Hojlund.

Antonio Conte’s side looked set to drop points after a roller-coaster encounter at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, but Hojlund held his nerve from the spot deep into stoppage time to secure all three points and move Napoli within six points of leaders Inter, who play on Sunday.

The hosts struck first inside the opening minute after Alessandro Buongiorno misjudged a long ball, forcing goalkeeper Alex Meret into a clumsy challenge on Vitinha. Ruslan Malinovskyi converted the resulting penalty to give Genoa the perfect start.

Napoli responded in the 20th minute when Hojlund pounced on a loose ball to equalise, and the visitors completed a quick turnaround just under two minutes later.

Scott McTominay unleashed a powerful strike from around 35 yards that flew into the bottom-left corner to make it 2–1.

Genoa, however, hit back before the break. Lorenzo Colombo capitalised on another error from Buongiorno near the halfway line, sprinted clear on goal, and finished calmly past Meret to restore parity.

Napoli’s task became even tougher in the 76th minute when Juan Jesus received a second yellow card for a foul on Brooke Norton-Cuffy, leaving the visitors down to ten men.

But in stoppage time, Antonio Vergara was brought down by Maxwel Cornet in the area, and Hojlund stepped up to convert the decisive penalty, which slipped under goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

The brace ended the Dane’s seven-game league drought in 2026 and took his season tally to eight Serie A goals.

He also led Napoli with three shots on target, contested 17 duels, and contributed 1.53 of the team’s 2.37 expected goals.

Genoa created 1.32 xG from 12 attempts, but Daniele De Rossi’s men were left frustrated after coming so close to taking a point in front of their home supporters.
