Senate screens ex-INEC chair Yakubu, Omokri, others for ambassadorial role

Several ambassadorial nominees, including former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, and former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, appeared before the Senate on Thursday for their screening.

Their presence generated significant attention within the National Assembly complex as lawmakers continued the assessment of President’s latest diplomatic nominees.

The trio was part of a large group of high-profile nominees who arrived early for the exercise, creating a noticeable buzz around the Senate wing.

Security operatives, legislative aides, and journalists were also on ground to monitor the high-stakes session, which forms part of the confirmation process for ambassadorial postings.

Among those who also honoured the invitation were former Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazau, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Senator Grace Bent, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Senator Ita Enang, and Senator Nora Daduut.

They joined other former ministers, ex-lawmakers, and serving diplomats who were scheduled to appear before the committee.

After brief introductions, each nominee provided a short overview of their public service record before the lawmakers.

The session, however, remained largely procedural, given the calibre of individuals involved and the Senate’s established practice during such screenings.

As expected, the Senate applied its long-standing tradition of allowing former ministers, ambassadors, and lawmakers to “take a bow and leave,” concluding their appearance without further questioning.

The exercise is expected to continue as the upper chamber works toward finalising the list of approved ambassadorial candidates.
