Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United this summer after Chelsea failed to come to terms with the winger over a permanent deal, despite his season-long loan at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old former England international joined Chelsea last summer on loan, with a reported €30 million obligation-to-buy clause embedded in the agreement.
However, Chelsea had inserted a safeguard, an option to cancel the permanent move by paying a €6 million penalty, a clause they have now decided to trigger after being unable to reach an agreement on personal terms with Sancho.
This development was reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who stated that discussions between Chelsea and Sancho’s camp failed to produce an agreement.
As a result, he will return to Man Utd once his loan spell at Chelsea ends on 30 June.
Sancho is believed to be evaluating his future, with interest coming from clubs within England and from overseas.
During his loan stint with the Blues, Sancho featured in 41 matches, scoring five times and assisting 10 goals.
His efforts helped Chelsea lift the Europa Conference League title following their recent final win over Real Betis.
Though his return to Old Trafford is confirmed, reports suggest a long-term stay at United remains doubtful.
Despite speculation, the 25-year-old is more likely to leave the club on a permanent basis during the upcoming transfer window.
Sancho is among a list of forwards Manchester United are reportedly looking to offload, which includes Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s side, Chelsea’s rivals in the market, have already completed the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha and are pushing to secure Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, signalling a major attacking overhaul.
