PSG beat Lens to clinch fifth straight Ligue 1 title

Paris Saint-Germain clinched a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title on Wednesday after defeating RC Lens 2-0 in a decisive top-of-the-table clash at the Parc des Princes.

Needing only a draw to secure the championship, PSG instead sealed victory to move nine points clear of Lens with just one match remaining in the season.

Georgia winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia continued his impressive form by opening the scoring in the 29th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake, while teenage forward Ibrahim Mbaye wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time with a powerful finish off the crossbar.

PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his side after guiding the club to a record-extending 14th French league crown and his third Ligue 1 title since taking charge in 2023.

“Without a doubt this was difficult. Lens did so well this season,” Luis Enrique said. “I think they deserved more tonight but Matvei Safonov was incredible.”

Goalkeeper Matvei Safonov produced several crucial saves to deny Lens, who created numerous chances throughout the contest.

Wesley Saïd missed two big opportunities before the break, while Abdallah Sima was twice denied in the second half, including one effort that struck the post.

PSG took the lead after Ousmane Dembélé intercepted a poor pass from defender Malang Sarr and set up Kvaratskhelia, who calmly finished past the goalkeeper.

Mbaye then added the second goal late on, smashing Désiré Doué’s pass into the net moments after Lens squandered another promising opening.

The victory keeps alive PSG’s hopes of winning a treble this season after already lifting the French Super Cup.

The French champions will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League Final against Arsenal on May 30 in Budapest.

Lens, meanwhile, will focus on their upcoming French Cup final against OGC Nice on May 22.
