A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Chinedu Ogah, has called on President Bola Tinubu to review the ban on sachet alcohol production and sale in Nigeria.
Ogah, representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi State, made the call in a statement on Saturday.
He stated that the ban has led to over two million job losses across the country, particularly among youths who were laid off from over 20 indigenous factories, according to Daily Post.
The affected factories, worth trillions of Naira, have been closed for over six months.
Ogah, Chairman of the House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, emphasized that the ban has affected the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, a sub-sector of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, with 2.5 million workers.
He urged President Tinubu to address the issue, citing the planned nationwide protests from August 1 to 10, 2024, and the significant impact on Nigerians, particularly in Lagos and Ogun States, where the factories are located.
“Over two million Nigerians are out of job because of the ban and these are the people agitating for the planned national protests in the country slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.
“The greatest form of agitation is coming from Nigerians domiciled in Lagos and Ogun States, where these factories are sited.
“These factories have been paying their taxes and so, after carrying out an overview on this development, we want Mr President to look into it as it demands urgent attention,” he said.
