The Ogun State Police Command has disclosed plans to arrest and prosecute a female TikTok user, Mirabel, after she allegedly confessed that her earlier claim of sexual assault was fabricated.
The controversy intensified after an audio conversation between Mirabel and social media personality VeryDarkMan, popularly known as VDM, surfaced online and quickly went viral.
In the recording, Mirabel was heard apologising after being confronted with inconsistencies in her narrative.
“Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” she reportedly said during the exchange.
Further details from the audio suggest that she admitted parts of her original account were untrue.
She also allegedly confessed to creating a threatening TikTok account herself in an attempt to bolster her claims.
“I have been taking drugs, and I was not thinking clearly when I posted the videos,” she stated in the clip.
The development has dramatically shifted public opinion on the matter, sparking intense debate across social media platforms, where the initial allegation had earlier generated widespread outrage and sympathy.
A senior police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to address the media, told The PUNCH that the Divisional Police Officer and other senior officers were stationed at the hospital where Mirabel is currently receiving treatment.
“The DPO and some senior police officers are currently at the hospital where she is admitted. Once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody, and a charge will be prepared against her for trial. The essence is to serve as a deterrent to others,” the source said.
Spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the command is reviewing the case and assured that an official statement would be issued in due course.
Mirabel had initially taken to TikTok to allege that an unidentified man forcefully entered her apartment in the Ogijo area of Ogun State and sexually assaulted her.
The claim triggered swift reactions online, with many users demanding justice and stronger action against sexual violence.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to make contact with her.
Mirabel subsequently presented herself at the Ibafo Police Station, where preliminary findings indicated that the alleged incident fell within the jurisdiction of Ogijo.
She was first taken to a medical facility for urgent attention before being transferred to the Ogijo Police Station for formal documentation and further investigation.
However, due to concerns about her health and what authorities described as her fragile condition, she was later referred for extended medical care.
With her reported admission now in circulation, the police say legal proceedings will commence once she is medically cleared, stressing that the move is intended to discourage false reporting and protect the integrity of genuine sexual assault cases.
