Police sensitise Delta corps members on cybercrime, rights

The Delta State Police Command has sensitised members of the National Youth Service Corps in the state on issues of cybercrime, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, police accountability, and community policing.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Warri on Wednesday, noting that the lecture series was organised in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to strengthen police–community relations nationwide.

According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, mandated him to deliver the lecture at the NYSC orientation camp as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration.

“The corps members were encouraged to remain good ambassadors of their country, shun crime and violence, and uphold honesty and kindness in their future endeavours,” Edafe said.

He added that the interactive session also addressed how corps members can play an active role in promoting peace and patriotism.

“They were reminded of their rights and responsibilities as citizens, including respecting the Constitution and institutions, promoting national interest, and assisting law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace within communities,” he explained.

The police further assured participants of channels to report misconduct or abuse by officers, providing them with official complaint lines for easy access.

Describing the exercise as impactful, some corps members commended the initiative, noting that it clarified misconceptions about policing and deepened their understanding of their civic responsibilities.

Edafe emphasised that the Delta Police Command would continue to engage youths through such enlightenment programmes, stressing, “We want young people to know their rights, respect the law, and work with security agencies to build a safer society.”
