The Enugu State Police Command says it rescued 211 victims of kidnapping and detained 6,240 suspects during 17 months of security operations across the state.
The Punch reported that the command also recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of ammunition during the period under review.
The Command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, on Saturday in Enugu.
Giwa presented the figures while receiving the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, Miller Dantawaye, who paid a working visit to the command on Friday.
According to the commissioner, the statistics covered the operational achievements recorded since he assumed office on March 11, 2025.
He explained that among the 6,240 suspects detained were 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 suspected armed robbers, 188 murder suspects and 57 suspects linked to rape and defilement.
The command also arrested 273 suspects over alleged cult-related activities and 63 others for unlawful possession of firearms.
Giwa said the remaining 5,315 suspects were detained in connection with various other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.
On the weapons recovered, the commissioner disclosed that they included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, alongside other firearms.
He added that 209 vehicular exhibits, comprising motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, were also recovered during the operations.
The commissioner attributed the achievements to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and increased collaboration with neighbouring states.
He identified the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, as well as improved emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre as some of the measures responsible for the results.
Giwa appealed for continued support from the police zone, particularly in manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare, saying these would help the command build on its achievements.
In his response, Dantawaye urged officers and personnel to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct in the discharge of their duties.
He also directed them to adhere strictly to Force regulations and respect the rights of citizens.
The AIG encouraged the personnel to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and continue working to strengthen public confidence in the police.
He also expressed his willingness to collaborate with the command to further improve security across Enugu State.
