Police probe alleged assault on Ogun truck drivers by ‘cops’

The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a truck driver alleging that he was chased and assaulted by men posing as police officers in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

In the footage circulating on social media, the driver claimed the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, around 4 a.m., when the men, who identified themselves as members of a task force, allegedly pursued him while he was driving through the area.

Visibly distressed, the driver accused the men of attacking him without provocation, damaging his truck, and threatening his life. He alleged that the assailants were armed and acted aggressively throughout the encounter.

“They have been chasing me with guns and stones. They said they are task force, but they are thieves,” the driver said in the video. “IG of Police, Nigerians, please help me. They have been pursuing me since I entered Ijebu-Ode.”

The video also captured moments where the driver’s truck window appeared smashed, while several of the men were seen confronting and assaulting him as he continued recording. One of the individuals was spotted wearing a T-shirt commonly associated with police personnel, further fueling concerns over impersonation.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command had begun investigations and clarified that one of the men identified in the video is not a police officer.

“The Ogun State Police Command wishes to state clearly that the individual referenced in the viral video is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force,” Babaseyi said.

“Verification is ongoing in collaboration with relevant agencies to determine the true identity of the suspects, as investigations and inter-agency engagements continue.”

The police spokesperson noted that the command is treating the matter with urgency amid rising reports of criminals impersonating security personnel, especially along major road.

The driver also alleged that the men attempted to force him to stop while his vehicle was still in motion, a move he said endangered his life and that of other road users.

“I was asked to stop while driving. Why would I stop?” he said, recounting the incident.

The police have urged members of the public to promptly report similar incidents, assuring residents that those found impersonating officers or involved in unlawful acts would be brought to justice.
