Police kill bandit, rescue victims in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has killed one suspected bandit and arrested three others during coordinated operations in Maiyama and Shanga Local Government Areas of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the operations were carried out following distress calls from residents during two separate bandit attacks.

According to Abubakar, eight armed men invaded Botoro Gadi community in the Mungadi area of Maiyama LGA, where they abducted two persons — Muhafi Sani and Shamsiya Aliyu — from the home of one Alhaji Sani.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer in Maiyama led a team of police operatives and local vigilantes in pursuit of the attackers,” Abubakar said.

“During the encounter, one of the suspected kidnappers was neutralised, while a dane gun and an empty cartridge shell were recovered at the scene.”

He added that in another coordinated operation, bandits launched an attack on Kwari village in Giron Masa, Shanga LGA, and abducted two residents identified as Suleiman and Yunwa Suleiman.

“The Divisional Police Officer in Shanga, working with army personnel and vigilantes, mobilised quickly and engaged the assailants,” the police spokesperson explained.

“The kidnappers were forced to abandon their victims and flee into the forest with gunshot wounds.”

In a related development, police operatives arrested one Musa Muhammad in Takware village, Shanga LGA, for unlawful possession of ammunition.

Recovered items included three live rounds of ammunition and 20 empty shells of 7.62×39mm calibre.

Abubakar confirmed that all rescued victims had been medically examined and reunited with their families.

“The Command remains resolute in its determination to rid Kebbi State of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property,” he assured.

He recalled that in October, the Command also neutralised three suspected Lakurawa bandits in a gun duel in Dandi Local Government Area, an operation that foiled another planned attack on Gorun Yamma village.
