A primary school teacher in Kogi State has died after allegedly being assaulted by three people over disciplinary action taken against a pupil, prompting the police to launch a manhunt for the suspects.
The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Maryam Usman, was reportedly attacked on June 18 at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, said the case was reported to the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25 as a case of culpable homicide.
According to Afusat, preliminary investigations revealed that a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly invaded the school and assaulted the teacher over the punishment she had given to a pupil.
“The victim sustained serious injuries during the assault. She was first taken to a hospital in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further treatment. Sadly, she died on June 25, 2026, while receiving medical care,” Afusat said.
She added that detectives visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence after the matter was reported, while necessary documentation was carried out.
“The body will be moved to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for an autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects, who fled before police officers arrived,” she said.
Afusat assured that once the suspects are apprehended, the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
The police have urged members of the public with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects to come forward and assist the investigation.
