The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspect over allegations of cyberbullying, defamation, and threats to life involving popular Fuji musician, Adebisi Taye Akande, widely known as Taye Currency.
According to the police, the arrest followed a petition submitted to the office of the Commissioner of Police, which prompted an investigation into claims that the artiste was targeted with repeated defamatory statements on social media.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the suspect, Afunso Ridwan Abiola, also known as Rolex Dee, allegedly engaged in sustained online attacks capable of damaging the musician’s reputation.
“The petition alleged that the complainant was subjected to persistent cyberbullying and defamation across multiple social media platforms,” the statement said. “These actions were considered injurious to his reputation.”
Police further disclosed that the dispute may have stemmed from prior financial assistance reportedly given by the musician to the suspect to support his music career.
“It was alleged that the suspect had earlier received financial support amounting to ₦800,000 from the complainant but later made disparaging remarks against him,” the statement added.
Authorities also noted that the suspect allegedly made further defamatory comments during a public programme, which gained traction online and intensified the situation.
Following what the command described as “diligent investigation and technical intelligence,” operatives tracked and arrested the suspect in Lagos State. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Addressing reports circulating online, the police dismissed claims that the suspect was being unlawfully detained.
“The Command wishes to categorically state that such reports are false and a gross misrepresentation of facts,” Olayinka said. “The suspect is in lawful custody, and all procedures have strictly followed extant laws.”
The police reiterated their commitment to due process and the protection of the rights of all parties involved, urging the public and media organisations to avoid spreading unverified information.
“We encourage responsible reportage and advise media platforms to verify facts before dissemination,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, assured residents that justice would be pursued in accordance with the law.
“Members of the public should remain law-abiding and rest assured that justice will take its full course,” he said.
