Police arrest four suspects over fake $1,600 currency scheme in Delta

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have apprehended four individuals suspected of running a fraud ring involving counterfeit United States dollars, following an intelligence-led operation in Asaba.

The suspects — identified as Joshua Nwaosa, Daniel Arhewe, Prince Chukwuma, and John Egwuba — were arrested along Nnebisi Road after police tracked their movements based on credible intelligence, according to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe.

Edafe explained that the suspects were part of a five-man syndicate that allegedly used fake dollar bills to defraud unsuspecting members of the public while operating with a red unregistered Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV.

“On June 9, 2026, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit commenced surveillance on a syndicate suspected of using counterfeit United States dollar notes to scam people,” Edafe said.

He added that the surveillance operation led officers directly to the suspects’ location in Asaba, where they were taken into custody. During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to operating from a hideout in the city.

Following the confession, police conducted a follow-up raid at the hideout, where they recovered about 1,600 counterfeit US dollar notes, along with military camouflage items allegedly hidden at the premises.

Edafe further noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the syndicate’s activities and identify possible accomplices.

In a related development, the police also arrested two women in Ika North-East Local Government Area during a separate operation targeting drug trafficking networks. The suspects were found with various suspected illicit substances, including cannabis variants and other psychoactive drugs.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the officers involved, commending their “professionalism and commitment to intelligence-driven policing,” and reaffirmed the command’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks across Delta State.

Authorities say investigations into both cases are ongoing.
