The Oyo State Government has ordered traders, artisans, motor dealers, and street vendors occupying pedestrian walkways and roadside areas to vacate the locations or face penalties.
The directive was issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority Major Adesagba Adekoya (retd.), during a briefing at his office in the state secretariat, Ibadan.
Major Adekoya emphasized that using walkways for business activities is illegal and poses serious risks to public safety.
“Trading on pedestrian walkways is not only against the law, it also causes traffic congestion, increases the likelihood of accidents, and inconveniences shoppers,” he said.
He specifically identified areas such as the University of Ibadan environs, Samonda, and Mokola as hotspots for illegal trading.
“Traders are expected to move to designated market spaces immediately, particularly with the festive season approaching. Failure to comply will attract fines and possible court action,” Major Adekoya warned.
The state government praised OYRTMA for its continuous efforts to enhance road safety and maintain public order.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading infrastructure across Oyo State to ensure safe and smooth movement for all residents.
