One killed, four injured in Anambra road crash

One person has been confirmed dead while four others sustained injuries following a road traffic accident along the Awka–Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State.

The crash occurred at the Nawfia axis, near Enugu-Agidi Junction, and involved a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV driven by an unidentified motorist.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, said five persons were involved in the crash.

“The crash involved five occupants comprising two male adults, two female adults and one female child,” Onabe said.

According to her, one female adult died in the accident, while the remaining four occupants—two male adults, one female adult and a female child—sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured victims suffered bruises, fractures and head trauma,” Onabe stated.

She attributed the accident to suspected excessive speed, tyre burst and loss of control by the driver.

“A lone fatal road traffic crash occurred on December 25, 2025, at about 9:45am on the Nteje–Onitsha route around the AA Rano Station, Ogbunike Tollgate,” she said. “The suspected causes of the crash are speed violation, tyre burst and loss of control.”

Onabe added that the injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the deceased was deposited in a morgue. She noted that the damaged vehicle was later towed to the Ogbunike Police Station.

The Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

“She urged motorists to always obey traffic regulations, avoid overspeeding and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable crashes,” Onabe said.

The incident comes weeks after a similar crash at the same Nawfia axis on November 29, where six persons reportedly died following a collision between a truck and a commercial bus, an accident the FRSC attributed to reckless driving and excessive speed.
