Ogun approves weekly day off, N10,000 transport allowance for civil servants

The Ogun State Government has introduced new relief measures for its workforce, approving a weekly day off and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for civil servants across the state.

The initiative, which takes effect from April 2026 and will run for three months, was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya.

According to Onasanya, the decision was taken to ease the financial strain on workers following the recent increase in fuel prices and the rising cost of transportation.

He said, “In view of the hike in the pump price of fuel and its impact on transportation costs and the general cost of living, the governor has approved one day off duty per week for civil servants.”

He added, “This is also accompanied by a ₦10,000 special transport allowance to serve as a palliative for a period of three months, beginning from April 2026.”

The Head of Service explained that the intervention is aimed at providing temporary relief while also sustaining productivity within the state’s civil service.

However, he noted that the weekly day-off policy would not apply to workers in essential sectors. These include healthcare personnel, judicial officers, teachers, security agencies, and heads of departments.

“Officers on essential duties are exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement to ensure continuity of critical services, but they will benefit from the transport allowance,” Onasanya stated.

He further explained that accounting officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies would determine the specific day off for eligible staff, ensuring that government operations are not disrupted.

Onasanya commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he described as a timely intervention, urging civil servants to reciprocate the gesture with greater commitment and efficiency in service delivery.
