NYSC unveils healthcare initiative for rural dwellers

The National Youth Service Corps has expressed grief over the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Ogun State, confirming that a staff member is under investigation in connection with the incident.

Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died under circumstances that are currently being investigated by the Ogun State Police Command.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the NYSC described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a Corps Member under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” the Scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, said.

The organisation noted that it is cooperating fully with security agencies to uncover the facts surrounding the case.

“The matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,” the statement added.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, also confirmed that the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” he stated.

Sources familiar with the situation alleged that the death may be linked to complications from a medical procedure, although authorities have not officially confirmed this claim.

The NYSC reiterated its commitment to discipline and accountability within the Scheme.

“We maintain a strict code of conduct for staff and Corps Members and will not condone any act of misconduct or abuse of office,” the statement read.

The Scheme further appealed to the public to avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.

“We urge the public to refrain from speculations and allow due process to take its course, as the welfare and safety of our Corps Members remain paramount,” it added.

The incident has raised concerns among corps members and residents, coming shortly after the reported death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, in the same local government area.

Authorities say investigations into both cases are ongoing.
