NSCDC commandant slumps, dies at Edo event

The Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Agun Gbenga, tragically passed away on Thursday after collapsing during an event in Benin City, the state capital.

Gbenga reportedly slumped in his seat moments after delivering a goodwill message at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre.

Eyewitnesses said efforts to revive him at the venue proved unsuccessful. He was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital in Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

The incident threw the gathering into confusion, as many shocked attendees hurriedly left the venue, expressing disbelief that the commandant, who had appeared healthy on arrival, could pass so suddenly.

One of the eyewitnesses, Odion Ugbe, recounted his shock at the development. According to him, Gbenga came in “looking healthy” and was known as a gentleman dedicated to the service of the country.

He said, “It is unfortunate that the man had to die this way. He came into the hall full of life, but he was carried out dead. He had just read his speech, and he was sitting down when he slumped.

“People with medical experience tried to resuscitate him, but could not succeed. By the time he was taken to the military hospital, he was said to have been brought in dead by the doctor in charge.”

Ugbe further revealed that he had seen Gbenga just last week at another programme, where they discussed the importance of strengthening the country’s security.
