NSCDC arrests four suspected phone snatchers in Kano

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kano State have arrested four suspects over alleged involvement in public disturbance and phone snatching in Dorayi Babba area of Gwale Local Government Area.

The arrests were confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said the suspects were apprehended during a routine patrol by NSCDC personnel following a tip-off from a resident of the area.

“NSCDC operatives on routine patrol duty apprehended four suspects in connection with causing public disturbance, attacks and snatching handsets at Dorayi Babba in Gwale Local Government Area,” he said.

According to him, a concerned resident alerted security operatives that a group of armed hoodlums had gathered around a community school, where they allegedly attacked worshippers observing Taraweeh prayers as well as passersby.

“A good Samaritan informed the NSCDC outpost that several hoodlums armed with weapons had converged around a community school, attacking worshippers observing Taraweeh prayers and passersby while dispossessing them of their belongings, including mobile phones,” Abdullahi stated.

He added that NSCDC personnel quickly responded to the alert and dispersed the group before arresting four suspects believed to be involved in the incident.

The spokesperson identified the suspects as Yusuf Auwal, 18; Abubakar Abdullahi, 21; Huzaifa Isma’il Aliyu, 27; and Yushau Abubakar, 17, all residents of Dorayi Babba in Gwale Local Government Area.

“They were arrested with a sharp knife and two parcels of suspected marijuana after allegedly attacking an individual and snatching his handset,” he said.

He noted that investigations into the case had been concluded and that the suspects would soon be charged to court for prosecution.

Phone snatching and related street crimes have remained a persistent security concern in parts of Kano metropolis, particularly in densely populated areas where criminals often target pedestrians and worshippers during evening hours.
