Notorious bandit leader Turji gives FG conditions for peace in Zamfara

A notorious bandit leader in Nigeria, Bello Turji, has released a video outlining his conditions for peace in Zamfara State.

Turji, who has been on the run since security forces declared him wanted four months ago, is demanding an end to attacks on Fulanis by security agents and vigilante groups.

Turji’s video message accuses Nigerian leaders of seeking to exterminate the Fulani people, alleging genocide and unequal treatment.

In a video on X, he demands government collaboration with his group to achieve peace and recognition of Fulani rights.

The bandit leader’s demands come amidst ongoing violence in Nigeria’s northwest region. Turji’s group has been responsible for numerous massacres and terrorist attacks, particularly in Zamfara and Sokoto States.

Turji’s backstory reveals a complex context. His family’s cattle were allegedly stolen, and six siblings murdered by a pro-security forces vigilante group, driving him to take up arms.

The Nigerian government’s response to Turji’s demands remains uncertain. Addressing the root causes of the conflict, ensuring equal treatment of all ethnic groups, and engaging in meaningful dialogue will be crucial in achieving lasting peace.

Turji’s video features him seated on a new motorcycle with guns beside him, a symbol of his continued influence.

He said, “Even if you kill us, it’s God who ordained that to happen, but it’s not by your power.”
