The Nigerian Labour Congress has called on Nigerians across the country to boycott the services of major telecommunications companies in protest against a recent 50 percent tariff hike.
The leadership of the NLC issued the directive on Wednesday.
In a statement from the Central Working Committee signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the union announced that the boycott will begin at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 13, 2025.
Ajaero emphasized that the NLC is demanding an immediate reversal of the tariff increase, and that the status quo should remain until the telecom companies engage in further discussions and reach a conclusive agreement.
The NLC condemned the federal government’s failure to protect citizens from corporate exploitation and outlined that the boycott will take place daily from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm until the end of February 2025.
Ajaero also warned that if the tariff hike is not reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC will initiate a full nationwide telecom shutdown starting on March 1, 2025.
“He said, “If the tariff hike is not reversed by February 29, 2025, the NLC will commence a nationwide telecom shutdown from March 1, 2025.“
