The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a three-day period of dust haze and predominantly sunny conditions across Nigeria, beginning from Monday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency said moderate dust haze is expected over parts of Kebbi and Kano states in the North on Monday, with horizontal visibility ranging between two and five kilometres. Other northern states are forecast to experience sunny and hazy skies.
“For the central region, moderate dust haze with visibility of about two to five kilometres is anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State, while the rest of the region will be under sunny and hazy conditions,” NiMet stated.
The agency added that the southern part of the country would experience mostly sunny weather with few cloud patches, but noted the likelihood of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall in parts of Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.
On Tuesday, NiMet predicted slight dust haze over parts of Kano and Kebbi, while sunny and hazy conditions are expected to persist across the remaining northern states.
The central region, according to the agency, will remain largely sunny and hazy, with chances of isolated thunderstorms in parts of Plateau State later in the day.
“Sunny skies with patches of cloud are anticipated over the southern region, with prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states,” the agency said.
By Wednesday, NiMet forecast continued sunny and hazy skies over the northern and central regions, while the southern states are expected to have sunny intervals with occasional cloud cover and possible light rainfall over parts of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
The agency advised Nigerians to take necessary health and safety precautions.
“Dust particles are in suspension; the public should take necessary precautions. People with asthmatic and other respiratory conditions should be cautious of the present weather conditions,” it warned.
NiMet also cautioned motorists and airline operators, stating, “Driving during rain should be done with care, and airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.”
Residents were urged to stay updated with official weather information from the agency.
