NiMet forecasts three days of haze, sunshine across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a mix of haze, sunshine and isolated thunderstorms across the country from Wednesday to Friday.

In its latest weather outlook issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the agency said northern Nigeria would experience predominantly sunny and hazy conditions throughout the three-day period.

“Sunny and hazy skies are expected to prevail over the northern region during the forecast period,” NiMet stated.

For the southern part of the country, the agency predicted generally sunny conditions with patches of cloud, alongside the possibility of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall in some states.

“Chances of thunderstorms with light rain are expected over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the morning hours,” it said.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Imo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa states.”

By Friday, the agency forecast continued sunny and hazy conditions in the North during the morning, with dust haze expected to intensify in the afternoon and evening. Central Nigeria is also expected to experience sunny and hazy weather, while the southern region may see cloudy skies with sunny intervals in the morning and isolated thunderstorms with light rainfall in states including Anambra, Imo, Abia, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers.

NiMet warned that dust particles remain in suspension over parts of the North-Central region and advised residents to take necessary precautions.

“People with asthma and other respiratory conditions should take heed of the prevailing weather conditions,” the agency cautioned.

“Motorists are advised to drive with caution, especially during rainfall, while airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.”
