NFF denies calling for Infantino’s resignation

The Nigeria Football Federation has denied reports circulating on social media that it called for the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The NFF, in a statement published on its official X account on Saturday, described the reports as false and urged the public to disregard them.

“Contrary to reports, especially on social media, the NFF has never asked and is not asking for FIFA President, Mr Gianni Infantino, to step down as FIFA President. This is outright falsehood. Kindly disregard,” the federation said.

The clarification followed growing controversy surrounding Infantino’s leadership and discussions over a proposal involving the commercial rights to the World Cup, which has reportedly been abandoned.

The FIFA president has faced criticism from some European football associations, with Norway among those publicly backing calls for him to resign.
However, other football bodies, including the Confederation of African Football, have continued to support his leadership.

The NFF’s denial subsequently drew mixed reactions from Nigerian football enthusiasts on social media.

Some users questioned the federation’s position, while others suggested that the statement amounted to an endorsement of Infantino.

One X user, Henry Ikwunemere, wrote, “We know you. You would never.”
Another user, WallyTTweets, said, “Nobody expected you to. After all, you are NFF.”

Another user, oviomeze, simply commented, “If you did otherwise, we’d be shocked.”

The NFF, however, maintained that its position was limited to correcting what it described as inaccurate reports about its stance on Infantino’s continued leadership of FIFA.
