The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman for allegedly poisoning her husband in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area, the command confirmed.
The incident occurred on January 23 at around 5:00 p.m., when the husband reportedly fell seriously ill after consuming a meal prepared by his wife.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam.
“The deceased reportedly ate his lunch at home and suddenly became gravely ill,” SP Adam said. “He was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.”
Detectives from the Jahun Division quickly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the wife as the principal suspect.
During questioning, she allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison, claiming she had instructed her cousin to buy the substance used.
The police spokesperson added that the suspect “told investigators she was forced into the marriage by her parents, which she said influenced her actions.”
SP Adam further stated that the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution,” he said.
He also called on members of the public to remain calm and resolve family disputes through lawful means.
“We advise against taking the law into your own hands, as such actions often have irreversible consequences,” SP Adam emphasized.
“The police will ensure that justice is served in this case. The suspect is currently in custody, awaiting trial,” he added.
