NERC launches forum to harmonise federal, state power regulations

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has inaugurated a new platform aimed at strengthening collaboration between electricity regulators at the federal and state levels.

Speaking at the inauguration held in Lagos on Wednesday, the commission’s chairman, Musiliu Oseni, said the Forum of Nigerian Electricity Regulators would help address inconsistencies in regulatory practices across the country.

Oseni explained that the initiative was designed to promote coordination, prevent regulatory arbitrage, and ensure a unified approach to overseeing the power sector.

“Electricity remains the backbone of economic growth and national development. However, the sector continues to face numerous challenges that demand strong collaboration and synergy among regulators,” he said.

He added that regulators must go beyond their traditional roles, noting that their responsibilities include driving innovation, attracting investment, and safeguarding consumer interests.

“As regulators, we are not just arbiters of the industry; we are drivers of innovation and investment, as well as guardians of consumer protection and the broader public interest,” Oseni stated.

According to him, the newly established forum will deepen institutional cooperation and enhance the capacity of regulatory bodies to deliver a more efficient and coherent electricity market.
